Situation

A steam plant malfunction caused multiple pipes to break throughout the system in the university affecting several buildings on campus. The steam ran uncontrolled for several days, leading to issues with water condensation, damage to lead paint, and creating unique climate control challenges to preserve anatomy specimens as well as historical artifacts.

Response

Due to the size and complexity of the job, URI dedicated approximately 200 people daily through the various trades controlling this project including health and safety, traffic control, hazardous materials disposal, and restoration teams. More than 230,000 cubic feet of desiccant dehumidifiers were setup along with 1,400 pieces of portable equipment to dry and restore the buildings. More than $4 million in assets were involved with this project.
